As the days grow longer and the skies get sunnier, many of us are planning exciting trips away. Whether it’s a weekend city break or a long-haul beach holiday, preparation is key to ensuring your travels are not only fun but also safe and healthy.

Here’s your go-to travel health checklist to help you get ready in the months ahead.

Travel Health Checklist

✅ 1. Check Travel Vaccinations Early

Before packing your bags, check the recommended vaccinations for your destination. A trusted resource is the NHS’s FitForTravel website. It gives advice tailored to specific countries and regions.

💡 Top tip: If you’re unsure what vaccinations you need, consult your GP or a travel clinic well in advance. Some vaccines require multiple doses or time to become effective.

✅ 2. Arrange Travel Insurance

As soon as your trip is booked, get your travel insurance sorted. It provides peace of mind in case of illness, injury, or unexpected events.

💡 Check if your destination or airline requires a “fit to fly” letter, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition.

✅ 3. Plan Ahead for Medication Needs

If you take regular medication:

  • Make sure you have enough to cover the whole trip, plus extra for any delays
  • Let your GP or pharmacy know early to give them time to issue and dispense your prescription

Avoid last-minute stress by being proactive!

✅ 4. Pack Medication Properly

  • Keep medicines in original packaging with clear labels.
  • Bring a copy of your repeat prescription – this can be helpful if questioned at airport security or in an emergency abroad.
  • Always pack your medication in your hand luggage, not your checked bag.

💡 If your medicine is temperature-sensitive or requires refrigeration, speak to your pharmacist about safe storage options or travel-friendly solutions like cool bags./

✅ 5. Bring a Travel First Aid Kit

It’s always wise to be prepared. Your kit could include:

  • Plasters & blister plasters
  • Paracetamol
  • Antihistamines
  • Loperamide (for diarrhoea)
  • Rehydration sachets (like Dioralyte)
  • Antiseptic wipes or wound wash
  • Mosquito repellent

Having these essentials can save time and stress while you’re away.

✅ 6. Protect Yourself from the Sun

Don’t forget:

  • High-factor sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • A wide-brimmed sunhat

☀️ Tip: Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply regularly—especially after swimming.

✅ 7. Drink Water Safely

In some destinations, it’s best to avoid drinking tap water. To stay safe:

  • Drink sealed bottled water
  • Avoid ice in drinks (unless you know it’s made with safe water)
  • Use bottled water for brushing your teeth where necessary

A simple precaution can protect your trip from unpleasant stomach issues.

💡 Avoid raw salads and unpeeled fruits if local hygiene standards are questionable.

✅ 8. Enjoy Yourself!

Now that you’ve prepared thoroughly, all that’s left is to relax, explore, and make lasting memories, knowing you’ve taken the right steps to safeguard your health.
